A Note About A Few Of The Many Different Assignments Included:
There are three writing assignments in this unit, each with the purpose of informing, persuading, or expressing personal opinions. The detailed writing assignment sheets guide students through the assignments. The first assignment is to express personal opinions about the meaning of the sign at the mission. The second assignment is to inform: students are each assigned one of the factual people, places or things Bud mentions in the book to research. The third assignment is to persuade: students choose a point of view regarding either the incident with the Amoses or the incident at the train and write a persuasive argument supporting the position they believe is correct.

There are many symbols, ideas and things that thread throughout this book. Rather than waiting until the end of the book and then digging back through it to make some sense of them, this unit proposes a group work project throughout the unit.

These materials are geared for whole class use but are very easily adapted for independent study work, lit circles or book groups, home school use, or tutoring.

If you have never taught this book before, this manual will give you a great foundation of materials on a variety of levels.

If you have taught this book before, you might like to know that many veteran teachers have told us they have found our LitPlan Teacher Pack manuals to be much more thorough and more helpful than other materials they have used.
