A Note About A Few Of The Many Different Assignments Included:
There are three writing assignments in this unit, each with the purpose of informing, persuading, or expressing personal opinions. The detailed writing assignment sheets guide students through the writing assignments. The first assignment is to express personal opinions. Students are asked to imagine that they are one of the young people who know Mafatu. They give their opinions about courage and fear and whether or not Mafatu is a coward. The second writing assignment is to persuade. Students are asked to take the role of a tribal member and persuade the others to find a way to help Mafatu overcome his fear. The third writing assignment is to inform. Students write from Mafatu's point of view and create a survival manual to share with the members of his tribe and those on the other islands.
A project is included for students to complete in groups after they have finished with the rest of the unit. This project will encourage students to use skills in analysis and synthesis. It will also provide the teacher with a means of informal assessment.
These materials are geared for whole class use but are very easily adapted for independent study work, lit circles or book groups, home school use, or tutoring.
If you have never taught this book before, this manual will give you a great foundation of materials on a variety of levels.
If you have taught this book before, you might like to know that many veteran teachers have told us they have found our LitPlan Teacher Pack manuals to be much more thorough and more helpful than other materials they have used.
