A Few Additional Notes

There are three writing assignments in this unit, each with the purpose of informing, persuading, or expressing personal opinions. The detailed writing assignment sheets guide students through the assignments. The first assignment is to inform: students research a topic related to A Christmas Carol and write a report about it. The second assignment is to persuade: students will write a letter asking someone to support a cause they are sponsoring. The third assignment is to express a personal opinion: students give their opinion of the meaning of the holiday spirit.

This unit also has Project Tiny Tim, a total class project for use in conjunction with the novel A Christmas Carol. Since one of the main themes in the book deals with extending goodwill and kindness to others, especially the less fortunate, it seems the perfect occasion to make students aware of people in their own cities or towns who are in need. This project is intended to help students see the problem and have some part, however small, in really helping to do something about it.
