Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. Some of his most often-taught works are The Tell-Tale Heart, The Black Cat, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Purloined Letter, Murder in the Rue Morgue, The Pit and the Pendulum, Masque of Red Death, The Cask of Amontillado, The Raven, To Helen, Lenore, Ulalume, The Bells, and Annibel Lee.
