A Few Additional Notes

There are three writing assignments in this unit, each with the purpose of having students practice informing, persuading, or expressing personal opinions in writing. In the first assignment, students will imagine and write about what it would be like to be an animal in captivity. In the second writing assignment, students will research the plagiarism controversy regarding Life of Pi and a German tale, Max and the Cats. In the third writing assignment, students will take a position inspired by a quotation from the novel.

There are many activities included in this unit. There's a group project in which students read Crane's short story "The Open Boat," replace the narrator with an animal character, and retell the story as that animal. In My Life In Pictures, students choose four pictures that represent their childhoods and write a paragraph about each. There's also a totem pole activity in which students choose three animals that would appear on their families' totem poles. They sketch the poles and write "totem poems" following the example given.
